Fluoxetine (Prozac)

Fluoxetine (trade name Prozac), is an antidepressant belonging to a class of medication called selective serotonin reuptake inhabitors (SSRIs) . It is used to treat major depression, obsessive-compulsive disorders, bulimia, anorexia and panic disorders. Fluoxetin was the third most prescribed antidepressant in the United States, in 2007.

How it works?

SSRIs drugs, including Fluoxetine, work by increasing the amount of neurotransmitters called serotonin in certain parts of the brain.

People that should not take Prozac:
Serious and fatal reactions may occur when the medicines, MAO inhabitors and thioridazine are taken with Prozac.
Do not take prozac if you are allergic to any drug, or if you :
  • have cirrhosis of the liver;
  • kidney disease;
  • diabetes;
  • seizures or epilepsy;
  • bipolar disorder (manic depression); or
  • a history of drug abuse or suicidal thoughts.

  • are pregnant. Side effects: lung problems in newborn babies.
Side Effects
Less serious side effects may include:
  • cold symptoms such as a stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat;
  • drowsiness, dizziness, feeling nervous;
  • mild nausea, upset stomach, constipation;
  • increased appetite, weight changes;
  • sleep problems (insomnia)
  • dry mouth.

More serious side effects may include
  • severe blistering, peeling, or a red skin rash;
  • very stiff (rigid) muscles, high fever, sweating, fast or uneven heartbeats, tremors, overactive reflexes;
  • nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, feeling unsteady, loss of coordination; or
  • headache, trouble concentrating, memory problems, weakness, confusion, hallucinations, fainting, seizures, shallow breathing or breathing that stops

Prozac is a drug to treats depression, here are some interesting facts:
  • Antidepressants work for 35 to 45% of the depressed population.
  • Antipressants such as Prozac have recently been revealed to have serious risks, and are linked to suicide, violence, psychosis, abnormal bleeding and brain tumors.
  • Antidepressants work only as well (or less) than placebos.
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy has an 80% relapse rate in the long term.
  • Most doctors advise a combination of therapy and antidepressants.

A: What i have learnt about drugs is that

b) Drugs may harme people in many ways
c) Many people take drugs

Make people dont use drugs to get high and happy.Only take healthy drugs.
